The Golden Triangle – People, Process, Technology

Somehow, I wanted to write about People and Processes, while thinking about this topic it just struck me how can I ignore Technology and value what it provides to our day-to-day lives.

While researching this topic I came across a framework called “The Golden Triangle” and today’s topic is pretty much going to be around that.

I will be covering another topic “Leavitt’s Diamond Model” in another article – stay tuned!

Brief Intro on Diamond & Golden Triangle Model

In the early 1960s, business management expert Harold Leavitt developed his “Diamond Model” also called Leavitt’s Diamond Model which is a framework representing the Interrelationships between structure, tasks, technology, and people.

It examines how changes or developments in one component can impact the others, emphasizing the need for alignment and balance.

Eventually Structure and tasks turned the diamond into a “Golden Triangle” or “three-legged stool”

You may be wondering why it’s called the three-legged stool – the analogy is if one leg is taller or shorter the entire stool will tip over.

So, the People, Process, Technology framework, also known as the “Golden Triangle,” is a popular concept used in business and organizational management.

It recognizes the interconnectedness and importance of three key elements: people, process, and technology.

I remember creating comprehensive action plans around these topics to improve my entire business operations.

Framework

The framework suggests that these elements should be considered together and balanced effectively to achieve optimal outcomes and success.

People

People are at the heart of any organization. Includes employees, leaders, customers, stakeholders, and other individuals involved in the business.

This framework emphasizes the significance of understanding and leveraging the capabilities, skills, knowledge, and motivation of people within an organization.

Effective people management involves syncing your people with the mission, hiring the right people, coaching, training, development, providing the right tools and creating a positive work culture.

People are the ones who represent the organization and building a strong sense of loyalty is equally important. Organizations understanding the Mcgreggors hierarchy of needs and ensuring the requirements of people are met is definitely a critical factor to set a balance

Process

Process refers to the systematic and structured approach used to accomplish specific tasks or achieve desired outcomes.

It involves the series of steps, workflows, and procedures that define how work is done within an organization.

Efficient processes help streamline operations, reduce errors, improve productivity, and ensure consistency. It is essential to analyze, optimize, and continuously improve processes to enhance overall organizational performance.

Technology

Technology encompasses the tools, systems, software, and hardware that enable organizations to perform their tasks efficiently and effectively.

It includes computer systems, software applications, automation, communication networks, and other technological resources.

Adopting appropriate technology can greatly enhance productivity, innovation, and competitiveness. It is crucial to align technology with business goals, ensure proper implementation, and continuously update and adapt to emerging technologies.

Although technology can come with a high price tag, the cost of inefficient production and repetitive work far exceeds it. It is crucial to carefully analyze these costs and introduce new technology at the right time to ensure optimal outcomes.

Conclusion

To conclude, the Golden Triangle framework recognizes that each element is interconnected and depends on the others for success. Neglecting any one of these areas can lead to inefficiencies, bottlenecks, or missed opportunities.

For example, implementing new technology without considering the impact on people or processes can lead to resistance or ineffective utilization. Similarly, having talented people without streamlined processes or adequate technology can hinder performance.

Organizations that successfully apply the People, Process, Technology framework understand the importance of balancing and aligning these elements.
