Ups and Downs of Being a Manager: The Double-Edged Sword
Leadership. Guidance. Growth. These are the alluring words that paint a picture of managerial success. But behind the glossy veneer (cover (something) with a decorative layer of fine wood) lies a complex reality, a dance between the exhilarating highs and the crushing lows of being a manager. For aspiring leaders, understanding this duality is crucial.
You will understand this only if you have played a role of a manager or a leader, if not become one to experience.
To give you another perspective, imagine the life of a manager often resembles a challenging mountain climb. There’s the thrill of reaching the summit, the breathtaking views of accomplishment, the camaraderie with your team-turned-trailblazers. But there are also treacherous slopes of frustration, icy winds of criticism, and the constant tug between responsibility and self-preservation.
So, let’s take a closer look at the ups and downs of this unique path of Being a Manager
The Ups
- Impact and Influence: Watching your team grow and flourish under your guidance is an unparalleled reward. Seeing your ideas translate into tangible results and contributing to a company’s success is a source of immense pride.
- Leadership and Growth: The role demands continuous learning and self-improvement. You hone your communication, delegation, and conflict resolution skills, becoming a master navigator of human dynamics. (I can’t remember the amount of time I have spent on trainings I have gone through to ensure I am up to date before having the next meeting with my own members to give them the best insights I can)
- Mentorship and Connection: Building strong relationships with your team members, guiding their careers, and witnessing their personal and professional growth is a deeply fulfilling experience.
The Downs
- The Blame Game: Sometimes, despite your best efforts, things go south. You become the lightning rod for criticism, absorbing blame for issues beyond your control.
- The Tightrope Walk: Striking the balance between being a supportive leader and a demanding boss can be a delicate act. You need to empower your team while ensuring accountability, often walking a tightrope between praise and criticism.
- The Thankless Task: Managers often toil in the background, their efforts rarely receiving the recognition they deserve. Long hours, sleepless nights, and sacrificing personal time become par for the course. (Most of our people know the efforts we put, for example: my team members have always been supportive and asked me Vinod I see you very tired, Is there something we can do for you – this sentence usually makes my day and I just want to do more and give the best I have for them)
Lessons for Aspiring Managers
- Embrace the Responsibility: Own your decisions, take accountability for your team’s performance, and learn from both successes and failures. Remember, the buck stops with you!
- Lead with Empathy and Transparency: Build trust and psychological safety within your team. Be open to feedback, celebrate wins together, and offer support during challenging times. (Never ever think you are superior to them – trust me you don’t know where your own team members will be in the next few years so do the right thing and be humble and give the best you can)
- Set Boundaries and Prioritize Self-Care: Don’t be a martyr. Recognize your limitations, delegate effectively, and prioritize your well-being. A burnt-out manager is no good to anyone.
- Remember, People Grow and Forget: While some will celebrate your successes, others may move on and forget your contributions. Focus on the intrinsic rewards of leadership and mentorship, knowing your impact goes beyond mere recognition. (This is very very common and you will hate it – trust me but you must digest and let it go)
Finally, remember, the climb is not for everyone. But for those drawn to the challenge, the view from the manager’s summit is unparalleled. Just be prepared for the ups, downs, and everything in between. So, if you’re considering taking on this leadership mantle, pack your resilience, empathy, and a healthy dose of self-awareness.
The climb may be tough, but the rewards are worth it.
